The English Society – Essay Writing Prize 2015

The English Society is launching an essay-writing competition. Open to everyone from Year 9 to Year 13, as well as any keen members of staff, competition entrants are invited to explore this statement:


An’ never a God damn one of ‘em ever gets it’

– ‘Crooks’, in John Steinbeck’s ‘Of Mice and Men’


 Modern literature condemns its dreamers to failure. Discuss, with reference to the work of writers of your own choice.

  • Maximum of 2000 words
  • Discussion may be drawn from novels, poems, plays and films from the 19th, 20th and 21st centuries
  • Entries should be typed and submitted to a member of the English Department
  • Open to any student from years 9-13
  • Prizes for Best Junior and Best Senior Entry


Competition closes: Wednesday 15th April 2015
